Dry Stone Dyking

Dry stone walls or dykes, which rely on the skill of the builder rather than cement to keep them together, are an intrinsic part of our landscape and rich national heritage.

Traditionally, stone was gathered from the land and used to make field boundaries, enclosures for sheep and cattle, and houses and shelters for the people who worked the land. Nowadays, dry stone walls are also widely used in landscape gardening and for creating features such as seats and tables.

Why not spend two days amidst the stunning scenery of Monachyle Mhor with Master Dyker Dougie Clark learning this traditional craft, enjoying the physical challenge and creating something that you can be truly proud of?

Day 1
In small groups strip down a section of damaged wall, lay out the stones and prepare to rebuild.

Then, under the expert guidance of Dougie, learn how to select and place stone upon stone in such a way that they will not move and the wall will begin to take shape.

Day 2
Dougie will keep a watchful eye on you as you continue to build as a team. He will show you the finer points and by the end of the day your section of wall will be complete and ready to take on the next hundred years in good shape .

Relax and admire!

Tea, coffee and scrumptious MHOR bread and jam will be provided on arrival, soup and homemade sandwiches from Monachlyle Mhor Hotel will fuel you for the afternoon session.
