The red deer is the largest species in Scotland and the population is now thought to be in excess of 400,000. Deer numbers are continuing to increase and, therefore, an annual cull is necessary to keep the population healthy, and to protect the flora and fauna of the uplands.
At Monachyle MHOR we work with the Balquhidder Deer Management group which monitors the deer numbers in the glen and surrounding areas and allocates cull requirements accordingly.
We harvest at present 15 stags (September - October) and up to 25 hinds (November - February) annually
A day's stalking will normally start at around 9-9:30am, when you (and up to one friend or relative) will be met by our professional stalker at the hotel. Then, coffee and a bacon roll before heading to the target for a few shots. Once the rifle has been checked and the stalker is satisfied that you have reached the required standard of marksmanship, you will head up the glen in the vehicle to plan your day.
Normally there will be a stiff walk of at least an hour to get up onto the ridge from where you will get magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and lochs. There will be a chance for a breather as the stalker scans the ground for a suitable animal. Once the beast has been selected the stalk will commence, dependent on wind direction and using the stalker's intimate knowledge of the ground to avoid alerting the deer. The final approach usually involves a stealthy crawl to within 150 yards where a safe, humane shot can be taken.
The deer will then be recovered from the hill using an Argocat ATV and taken down to the larder back at the farm where it will be prepared, then hung in the chill for up to 3 weeks before being served in our award-winning restaurant.
The day usually ends at around 4.30-5pm with a welcome dram back at the hotel.
A day's deer stalking at Monachyle Mhor is both challenging and exciting, a truly memorable experience carried out in a stunning and wild landscape.
