Highland Perthshire with its craggy peaks and moody glens is invigorating walking and cycling territory, while for those more interested in clambering into their waders, the trout-rich Lochs Voil and Doine are at the bottom of the driveway. Golfers will find two 18-hole courses nearby – beautiful, hilly, Aberfoyle and the less vertically taxing course at Callander. There are also nine-hole courses at Killin, St Fillins, Comrie and Crief, all just a short drive away. Greneagles is an hour’s drive by car.
Birdwatchers also flock to the glen and, during season, stalking can be arranged. For panoramic views of the surrounding area, seaplane trips depart from the shores of Loch Voil. And after all that activity? Book a pampering spa treatment in your hotel room.
The area is also rich in history and legend. Rob Roy Macgregor lived, farmed and died in the glen and is buried, along with his family, in the local kirkyard. Slightly further afield, you’ll find Lake of Mentieth, Scotland’s only lake, and the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, a spectacular 75,000-acre wilderness managed by the Forestry Commission (the Visitors’ Centre is just outside Aberfoyle). The park runs alongside Loch Lomond and encompasses Lochs Ard, Achray and Lubnaig and the mountains Ben Venue, A’an and Ledi as well as giving access to Ben Lomond. There are walking trails within the park and both red and roe deer.
